Wargaming & teaching spotlight: Dr Timothy Peacock (University of Glasgow)
As a Lecturer in History & War Studies and Director of Games & Gaming Lab (UofGGamesLab), I lead or support varied game and wargaming projects for teaching and research across SHAPE/STEM disciplines. In teaching, this includes my leading teams of staff and student researchers co-creating and running physical or digital wargames, while aiming to evaluate strengths or limits of these games for learning. Some example topics range from AI Cyber Resilience (Broken Canvas) and Flooding crises (Tempest) to Global Strategy Wargaming (Damocles) and Nuclear Diplomacy (Dial N for Nuclear).
I have also developed and used research-based wargames or Serious Games in teaching internationally, involving professional training for public, private & non-profit organisations and exploring ways of their navigating potential future challenges. In March 2025, I led the development and running of Exercise HOPE AGE 25 with the United Nations (UN) in Geneva, a discussion-based game around planning humanitarian operations when facing a countdown to a hypothetical major cross-border conflict.
